Abstract
Objectives: To assess the association between bone mineral density(BMD) and the health-related quality of life(HrQoL) in postmenopausal women.

Methods: We examined 38 ambulatory postmenopausal women(mean age 64.4¡¾8.7 years). BMD was assessed in the lumbar spine and both femoral necks, using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and in the left radius and left tibia, using quantitative ultrasound. Nottingham Health Profile(NHP) was used as a questionnaire to assess the HrQoL. A high NHP score would indicate a low HrQoL. SPSS 10.0 was used for the statistical analysis.

Results: 28 women had osteoporosis(mean age 66.8¡¾7.6 years) and 10 women had osteopenia(mean age 56.4¡¾8.1 years). NHP did not significantly differ between osteoporotic women and osteopenic women. In osteoporotic women, the BMD did not correlated with the NHP score. Only emotional reaction correlated with the lumbar spine BMD.

Conclusion: In postmenopausal women, BMD did not correlate with the HrQoL.
